Turns out it's pretty difficult to keep these posts consistent when your blog is literally about nothing. Let's see, I saw a pretty good concert last night. Mason Jennings at the Bowery Ballroom. He was sans-band, which was actually pretty cool as it enabled him to show off his chops and be a bit more intimate with the crowd.
For those not familiar with his stuff, check out the track of the day link on the left and listen to some samples on Amazon. I guess you'd call it acoustic folk/rock, which doesn't sound very exciting. But thanks to some shifty fretwork, edgy arrangements and a cool-sounding drawl, his brand is a bit more distinctive. In fact, I take it back: Not folk. Jazz-dusted acoustic rock.
At one point last night I wondered whether he could be considered a Dylan contemporary, but I think that was just his harmonica, jewfro* and Minnesota roots talking. Rather, this guy can carry a tune and is actually a skilled guitarist. Zzzing.
And I love the Bowery Ballroom, by the way. Great sound, big floor, multiple bars and -- last night, anyway -- lots of cute girls. Probably the Minnesota natives.
Seriously being serious, give him a listen if you're into that sort of thing. The track I posted is "Train Leaving Grey," which I wanted to hear last night but was stymied. It's one of his more laid-back joints, but I dig it anyway so eff you. Check out this one for a more accurate representation:
"Keepin It Real" by Mason Jennings
* I actually don't think he's Jewish; but Robbie Zimmerman sure as hell is (two points for anyone who gets that reference).
